Nadda Assesses Influenza Situation, Stresses Vigilance And Strong Surveillance Across India
Nadda urges vigilance over H1N1 influenza.
Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Friday reviewed the prevailing H1N1 influenza situation and the country's preparedness to deal with seasonal influenza cases, with particular attention to the national capital. During the meeting, Nadda stressed the need for continued vigilance, robust surveillance and proactive preparedness to ensure that cases are detected early and patients receive timely clinical management. Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh also attended the review meeting. The Health Ministry said Nadda assessed the national surveillance and epidemiological situation, including trends involving influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI).
The review also covered testing and laboratory surveillance as well as the preparedness of healthcare facilities to manage patients affected by seasonal influenza. Monitoring these indicators can help health authorities identify changes in influenza activity and respond promptly if infections begin placing additional pressure on healthcare services. Preparedness in Delhi was also reviewed during the meeting, including the availability of hospital beds, critical care facilities and essential medical supplies. The minister emphasised the importance of ensuring that healthcare facilities remain equipped to manage patients with seasonal influenza and severe respiratory illness.
The focus on capacity and supplies is intended to ensure that hospitals can respond effectively if the number of patients requiring medical attention increases. Nadda called for close monitoring of influenza trends and proactive measures to strengthen preparedness. The ministry said coordination is continuing with states and Union territories, hospitals, laboratories and other stakeholders. The objective is to improve surveillance, facilitate early detection and ensure timely clinical management while maintaining readiness to respond to seasonal influenza, including H1N1. The minister also stressed the importance of public awareness and preventive health practices.

People have been advised to maintain respiratory hygiene and hand hygiene to reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Nadda said individuals experiencing persistent or severe respiratory symptoms, difficulty breathing or other warning signs should seek medical advice promptly rather than delaying consultation. H1N1, commonly referred to as swine flu, is one of the influenza viruses that can cause seasonal respiratory illness. Symptoms can include fever, cough and sore throat, while some vulnerable individuals can develop more serious respiratory complications. The severity of illness can vary depending on individual health and other risk factors, making early medical assessment important when symptoms become severe or persistent.
The Health Ministry said the influenza situation is being monitored continuously and that authorities are working with health institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen surveillance and preparedness. The ongoing coordination is aimed at ensuring that any changes in influenza activity are identified at an early stage and that healthcare facilities remain prepared to provide appropriate care. Officials have reiterated that preventive practices such as handwashing and respiratory hygiene remain important measures for limiting the spread of seasonal respiratory infections.
