Snake Enters Operation Theatre at Jhansi Medical College

Snake found inside operation theatre at Jhansi Medical College triggers safety alarm.

A startling incident unfolded at Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, when a snake was discovered inside one of its operation theatres (OT). The reptile was spotted by OT in-charge Kanak Srivastava during routine checks on Wednesday, prompting immediate action. Srivastava alerted the forest department, whose personnel swiftly responded, safely rescuing the snake and releasing it into the wild. The species of the snake was not disclosed, but the incident has raised significant concerns about safety protocols at the medical facility.

The discovery has led the college administration to implement stricter vigilance measures across all operation theatres and surrounding areas. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Sachin Mahour explained that the monsoon season increases the likelihood of reptiles and other creatures entering hospital premises due to heightened moisture and vegetation growth. “Following the incident, we have taken precautionary measures and instructed staff to remain extra vigilant to prevent such occurrences in the future,” Dr. Mahour stated, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness during this period.

This incident adds to the troubled history of the medical college’s operation theatre. On November 15, 2024, a devastating fire broke out in the OT, claiming the lives of 18 children and drawing widespread attention to safety lapses at the facility. More recently, on August 29, 2025, another fire in the OT’s electrical panel sparked panic, reigniting fears of a repeat tragedy. These incidents have put the spotlight on the need for robust safety and maintenance protocols at the institution.

In response to the snake incident, the college administration is reviewing its infrastructure to identify potential entry points for wildlife, such as gaps in doors, windows, or ventilation systems. Staff have been directed to conduct regular inspections and report any unusual findings immediately. The hospital is also coordinating with local authorities to ensure rapid response mechanisms are in place for future incidents involving wildlife or other hazards.

The incident underscores broader challenges faced by medical facilities in regions prone to environmental factors, particularly during the monsoon season. Maharani Laxmibai Medical College, a key healthcare provider in Jhansi, is now under pressure to restore public confidence in its safety standards while addressing these recurring issues to prevent further disruptions to critical medical services.
