Shashi Tharoor Flags Concerns Over Delimitation Exercise In Parliament Debate

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticised the proposed delimitation exercise, warning that it could have far-reaching political consequences and urging the central government to reconsider the move amid an ongoing debate over the redrawing of parliamentary and assembly constituencies.

Speaking during a public discussion on the issue, Tharoor drew a sharp comparison between the proposed delimitation and the 2016 demonetisation policy, describing the approach as similarly hurried. He cautioned that such a large-scale restructuring of electoral boundaries, if undertaken without broader consensus, could undermine the principles of cooperative federalism.

Tharoor argued that the government appeared to be advancing the delimitation process with the same urgency seen during demonetisation, which he said had led to significant economic disruption. “Unfortunately, we know what damage it did,” he remarked, adding that the current proposal risked creating comparable political instability if not carefully handled.

In his remarks, the Congress leader used a striking analogy, stating that the exercise could amount to “political demonetisation,” suggesting that it may reshape political representation in ways that could disadvantage certain regions or communities. He urged the government to pause and reassess the plan rather than proceeding unilaterally.

The comments come amid heightened political debate over delimitation, an exercise that is expected to redraw constituency boundaries based on population changes. Supporters argue it ensures fair representation, while critics caution that it could alter the balance of political power between states, making it one of the most closely watched policy discussions in recent times.
