Security on High Alert Over Pak-Backed '26-26' Republic Day Terror Plot
Intelligence flags coordinated JeM attacks backed by Pakistan's ISI and Punjab gangsters targeting temples and cities on or before January 26.
Security agencies have been placed on high alert following intelligence inputs warning of a coordinated terrorist strike planned on or before Republic Day on January 26, code-named “26-26,” according to official sources. The alert has prompted heightened vigilance across the national capital and surrounding regions ahead of the annual celebrations.
Sources said the suspected plot involves terrorists backed by Pakistan-based handlers and aided by Punjab-linked gangster networks. Intelligence agencies have indicated that the plan is allegedly being coordinated by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) through the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed, with logistical and ground-level support from criminal elements operating in northern India.
Potential targets identified in the intelligence warning include prominent religious sites such as the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the Raghunath Temple in Jammu, along with other temples and urban centres. Officials said the nature of the alert suggests the possibility of multiple, synchronised attacks aimed at causing mass disruption during the Republic Day period.

In response to the threat, security forces have intensified preventive measures across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Posters of wanted individuals have been displayed at key entry and exit points, including bus terminals and railway stations, to assist in identification and tracking. Additional checks, patrols, and surveillance have also been stepped up at sensitive locations.
Sources further noted that Jaish-e-Mohammed was responsible for a car bomb attack outside the Red Fort in November that claimed 15 lives, underscoring the seriousness of the current threat perception. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies while reiterating that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure public safety during Republic Day celebrations.
