S. Jaishankar Meets Andrii Sybiha In Cyprus, Reviews Ukraine War And Bilateral Engagement

India, Ukraine discuss peace efforts and battlefield situation.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held detailed talks on Wednesday on the sidelines of the informal EU foreign ministers’ meeting, known as the Gymnich Forum, in Cyprus. The discussions focused on the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war and broader international diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. Both leaders reviewed recent developments in the war and also assessed the state of bilateral engagement between India and Ukraine. The meeting came amid heightened global diplomatic activity around the conflict.

The two ministers exchanged views on evolving battlefield dynamics and the shifting geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe. They also discussed efforts being made by various countries to push for a negotiated settlement. A key focus of the conversation was the idea of achieving a “comprehensive and lasting peace,” reflecting ongoing international concern over prolonged hostilities and humanitarian impact.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the interaction as meaningful, noting that the discussion covered Russia’s continuing military operations and Ukraine’s recent battlefield developments. He highlighted what he called Ukraine’s growing initiative in the conflict and referred to intensified Russian strikes, including attacks on Kyiv. Sybiha said such actions had not weakened Ukraine’s resolve and reiterated his country’s desire to end the war through a durable peace framework and broader global diplomatic engagement.

Calling the meeting “useful,” Jaishankar said both sides exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict and also reviewed aspects of bilateral cooperation. India has maintained a balanced position on the war, consistently calling for dialogue and diplomacy while continuing engagement with both Russia and Ukraine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously emphasized that “this is not an era of war,” underscoring India’s broader support for peaceful resolution efforts through negotiation.

In addition to the Ukraine-focused discussions, Jaishankar also met Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to review developments in West Asia. He further held talks with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on India–EU cooperation and regional geopolitical issues. These engagements took place as part of broader diplomatic outreach during the Gymnich Forum, which brings together EU foreign ministers for informal discussions on global security challenges.

The Gymnich meeting in Cyprus provided a platform for ministers to exchange views on urgent geopolitical and strategic issues affecting Europe and beyond. Jaishankar’s participation underscored India’s growing engagement with European partners on matters of global security, energy stability, and conflict resolution. The discussions reflected ongoing efforts by multiple stakeholders to build consensus around diplomatic pathways to address major international crises.
