Revanth Reddy Pushes Centre for Stronger IPS Cadre as Hyderabad's Security Needs Surge
Telangana CM urges Centre to raise IPS strength and fund development in backward state regions.
Revanth Reddy on Wednesday urged the centre to increase the number of Indian Police Service officers allotted to Telangana during a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Revanth Reddy said the state’s policing requirements have grown significantly and require a stronger IPS cadre. He pointed out that the first cadre review after Telangana’s formation took place in 2016, while the next review—due in 2021—was delayed and eventually completed only in 2025. However, the review sanctioned just seven additional IPS officers for the state.
Revanth Reddy requested the Centre to increase the sanctioned IPS strength in Telangana from the current 83 to 105 officers. He also urged that the third cadre review, scheduled for 2026, be conducted on time to ensure the state’s law enforcement needs are addressed.

The chief minister highlighted emerging security challenges such as cybercrime, drug trafficking and white-collar offences, which he said require stronger policing capacity. He also noted the rising administrative workload due to the reorganisation of the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri police commissionerates, as well as the proposed Future City Commissionerate and the growing population in Hyderabad.
Issues related to Maoist surrenders and rehabilitation were also discussed. Revanth Reddy informed Amit Shah that policing in the state has improved in the past two years, with 591 Maoists surrendering and returning to the mainstream during this period. He added that several senior Maoist leaders had recently laid down arms and that the state government was providing compensation and rehabilitation support according to policy guidelines.
The chief minister also sought financial assistance from the centre for development projects in backward regions of Telangana. Senior officials present at the meeting included Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister V. Seshadri, Director General of Police B. Shivdhar Reddy, Intelligence Additional DGP Vijay Kumar and SIB IGP B. Sumathi.
