Residents Relocated As Relentless Rain Floods Valsad, Submerges Cars

Heavy rainfall continued to batter Gujarat on Thursday, with Valsad district emerging as one of the worst-affected regions as widespread flooding and waterlogging disrupted normal life. A video from Vapi in Valsad district showed more than 50 cars submerged in a flooded parking lot after incessant rain inundated low-lying areas. The footage, recorded from an elevated position, highlighted the extent of the flooding, with water levels reaching the windows of several parked vehicles.

The viral video captured a residential or commercial building's parking area completely filled with floodwater, leaving rows of vehicles partially or almost entirely submerged. The surrounding roads and nearby areas were also seen under water, indicating that the heavy rainfall had overwhelmed local drainage systems. The incident underscored the widespread impact of the ongoing monsoon across southern Gujarat.

According to official updates, Umbergaon in Valsad district recorded an unprecedented 1,100 millimetres of rainfall within 16 hours until Thursday morning. The exceptionally heavy downpour triggered severe flooding across the district, prompting authorities to shift thousands of residents from vulnerable and low-lying areas to safer locations. Emergency teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and assist affected communities.

The intense rainfall has caused significant disruption to transportation and daily life in several parts of Valsad. Roads have been submerged, traffic movement has been affected, and residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel until water levels recede. Local authorities continue to monitor rivers, drainage channels and flood-prone areas as heavy rain is expected to persist in parts of the state.

State disaster response agencies and local administration remain on alert, carrying out rescue, evacuation and relief operations wherever required. Officials are closely coordinating efforts to ensure stranded residents receive assistance while continuously assessing damage caused by the flooding. Civic authorities have also appealed to the public to follow weather advisories and cooperate with emergency personnel.

The flooding in Vapi is the latest reminder of the challenges posed by intense monsoon rainfall across western India. With heavy precipitation continuing in several districts of Gujarat, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid flooded roads, underpasses and waterlogged areas.
