Rescue, Relief Operations Intensify in Flood-Hit Punjab

A massive rescue and relief effort is underway in Punjab as floodwaters from the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers continue to submerge villages and farmlands across multiple districts, following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The Amritsar district administration, supported by the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Border Security Force (BSF), and state agencies, intensified operations to evacuate stranded residents, including women, children, and the elderly, from inundated villages in the Ramdas area.

Amphibious all-terrain vehicles (ATORs) and boats have been deployed to navigate the flooded terrain, particularly in villages swamped by the rising Ravi River. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, alongside Jalandhar Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Maninder Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner Rohit Gupta, personally oversaw the rescue operations. Affected villages include Ghonewala, Machhiwala, Mangu Naru, Shahzada, Jattan, Kot Gurbaksh, Pashian, Nissoke, Singhoke, Mehmad, Mundranwala, Ghaggar, Dharmabad, Ramdass, Shampura, Nangal Sohal, Rurewal, Pandori, Langarpur, Galib, and Bedi Channa.

Rescued individuals are being provided with food, relief materials, and safe shelter, according to officials. The worst-hit districts—Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar—have seen large swathes of farmland and residential areas submerged, displacing countless families. District administrations are urging residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to safer locations using boats and other resources.

The Punjab government has mobilized its entire cabinet to oversee relief efforts, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann directing ministers to remain in the field until the crisis is resolved. Cabinet members are actively coordinating the distribution of essential supplies, managing evacuations, and addressing the immediate needs of displaced residents. The government’s swift response aims to mitigate the impact of the floods, which have devastated rural communities and agricultural lands, while ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected.

As the situation remains critical, authorities are working around the clock to restore normalcy and support Punjab’s flood-hit regions.
