Relief for Bajwa? Punjab HC Shields Him from Arrest.. Find Out More

Punjab HC Shields Congress Leader Bajwa from Arrest Until April 22

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Punjab government, directing it not to arrest Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa until the next hearing on April 22, in a case stemming from his controversial “50 bombs have reached Punjab” statement. Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, had moved the court to quash an FIR filed against him at Mohali’s Cyber Crime police station.

The FIR, registered under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, accuses Bajwa of spreading false information endangering national sovereignty and inciting enmity. The charges relate to his claim in a TV interview that “50 bombs have reached Punjab, 18 have exploded, and 32 are yet to go off.” Bajwa’s counsel, APS Deol, told reporters the court has asked Punjab to respond to the plea challenging the FIR’s validity, while instructing Bajwa to refrain from public statements on the case.

Bajwa, 67, faced six hours of questioning by police on Tuesday, which he described as “sustained interrogation” and a “political vendetta” by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government. He maintained full cooperation during the probe. The case has intensified political tensions, with Congress alleging misuse of state machinery to silence opposition voices.

The High Court’s interim relief offers Bajwa temporary protection as the legal battle unfolds, spotlighting the fraught relationship between Punjab’s ruling AAP and opposition Congress. The April 22 hearing will determine whether the FIR stands, amid growing scrutiny of free speech and political motivations in the state.
