Rajnath Singh To Inaugurate Major Ammunition Manufacturing Facility In Shirdi

Shirdi ammunition factory inaugurated to boost defence production.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to inaugurate a major artillery ammunition manufacturing facility in Shirdi on Saturday, marking a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence production capabilities under the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will also be present at the inauguration ceremony, which is being held at the Savali Vihir Industrial Estate in Ahilyanagar district.

The newly established facility is part of the larger Shirdi Defence Manufacturing Complex and has been developed with an investment of around ₹1,000 crore. Spread across approximately 200 acres, it is expected to become one of India’s largest private-sector production units for artillery shells. Officials said the plant will manufacture up to five lakh 155 mm artillery shells annually using fully indigenous technology and locally sourced raw materials.

According to project details, the manufacturing complex has been designed to support a wider range of defence production activities beyond artillery shells. It will also include facilities for producing rocket launchers, long-range rocket components, drones, and electronic testing systems. Authorities said the project was completed within a year and is aimed at strengthening India’s self-reliance in critical defence manufacturing.

The facility is also expected to generate significant economic activity in the region, creating around 2,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. In addition, it is expected to provide a strong boost to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by integrating them into the defence supply chain, thereby supporting local industrial growth and employment.

Officials stated that the project is aligned with India’s broader ambition to become a global hub for defence manufacturing and exports. In addition to meeting domestic requirements, the facility is expected to contribute to international defence supply chains as India expands its military export capabilities under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for the World’ initiatives.

In parallel, another major ordnance manufacturing project is being developed at Belwandi in Shrigonda taluka, which will focus on explosives such as TNT, RDX, and HMX. Together, both projects are projected to create employment for up to 4,000 to 5,000 youth in the region. A two-day defence exhibition showcasing industry participation from leading companies and over 100 MSMEs is also being organised in Shirdi alongside the inauguration.
