Rajasthan Removes Class 9–12 History Supplementary Books After Concerns Over Mughal References

Rajasthan drops History books after objections over Mughal content

The Rajasthan School Education Department has ordered the removal of four supplementary history textbooks from Classes 9 to 12 after objections raised by Education Minister Madan Dilawar over their portrayal of Mughal-era content and broader historical narratives.

According to the official order issued by the state education directorate, the books have been categorised as “deleted texts,” meaning they will no longer be taught or referenced in classrooms from the 2026–27 academic session. District education authorities have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the directive across government and affiliated schools.

The withdrawn materials include supplementary reading books on Rajasthan’s history, freedom movement, and post-independence developments, which were previously introduced to provide additional context alongside the NCERT curriculum. Officials noted that these texts were non-examinable resources, but were still widely used as classroom support material.

The decision follows sustained objections from the education minister regarding the representation of Mughal history and certain interpretative frameworks within the books. While the government has not released a detailed academic review report, it has indicated that the content did not align with its preferred historical framing and required revision or removal.

The move has triggered political and academic debate in the state, with critics arguing that the withdrawal of supplementary material may limit students’ exposure to diverse historical interpretations. Supporters, however, maintain that curriculum rationalisation is necessary to ensure standardisation and ideological neutrality in school education.

This development adds to a broader national pattern of curriculum revisions and textbook controversies in recent years, where historical content has frequently become a point of political and ideological contention between state governments, education boards, and academic bodies.
