Rajasthan HC Locks 86,000 Unsafe Classrooms

Court bans dilapidated rooms after tragedy

In a landmark ruling, the Rajasthan High Court on Friday banned the use of 86,934 dilapidated classrooms in government schools across the state, ordering them locked to protect students. The decision by Justices Mahendra Kumar Goyal and Ashok Kumar Jain follows a government survey prompted by the tragic July collapse of a school roof in Jhalawar, which killed seven students and injured eight.

The survey revealed that of Rajasthan’s 63,018 government schools, containing 5,26,162 classrooms, 86,934 classrooms are completely unsafe. Additionally, 5,667 schools were deemed entirely unfit for use, with 17,109 toilets marked as dilapidated and 29,093 repairable. The court directed the state to arrange alternative facilities to ensure uninterrupted education for affected students.

The ruling comes amid heightened scrutiny after another incident in Jaisalmer, where a school gate collapse killed one student and injured two. The court has now ordered a technical verification by engineers, with the next hearing set for September 4. Social media posts have praised the court’s swift action, while parents and activists demand urgent repairs to ensure student safety across Rajasthan’s crumbling school infrastructure.
