Railways Plans 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains, Promising New Travel Options For Passengers
50 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Set To Launch.
Indian Railways is preparing to significantly expand its Vande Bharat sleeper network, with Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF) set to manufacture 50 sleeper trainsets, each consisting of 24 coaches. The planned production is expected to increase the availability of premium overnight rail services and provide passengers with a modern alternative for long-distance journeys. Since the introduction of Vande Bharat services, the trains have largely operated as daytime chair-car services on intercity routes. While the trains have focused on speed, comfort and modern onboard facilities, the absence of a wider sleeper network has remained a gap for passengers travelling overnight.
The planned trainsets are aimed at addressing that demand and extending the Vande Bharat experience to longer journeys. Each of the 50 proposed trainsets will comprise 24 coaches, providing substantially more accommodation for passengers travelling on overnight and long-distance routes. The larger configuration is expected to help Indian Railways increase capacity as it expands the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat platform across the country. The production programme is part of Indian Railways' broader effort to modernise passenger services and introduce faster and more comfortable trains on key routes. Sleeper services are particularly important for long-distance travel because passengers need accommodation suited to journeys that continue through the night.
The new trainsets are expected to strengthen the premium segment of India's rail network while offering passengers upgraded facilities. According to ICF General Manager Manish Agarwal, the production drawings for the indigenous 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets have already been completed. The drawings cover the overall coach structure, systems used to connect individual coaches and equipment that will be installed underneath the coaches. Completion of the production designs represents an important stage before manufacturing of the new trainsets begins. ICF, one of Indian Railways' major coach manufacturing facilities, is expected to play a central role in producing the sleeper versions.

The project also reflects the railways' emphasis on developing and manufacturing modern passenger trains domestically. The 24-coach configuration could allow the new sleeper trains to serve routes where demand for overnight travel is particularly high. However, the exact routes on which the 50 trainsets will operate, as well as their service schedules and fares, will be determined by Indian Railways as the rollout progresses.
The expansion also marks a shift in the role of the Vande Bharat platform. Initially associated primarily with premium daytime intercity travel, the introduction of more sleeper trainsets could enable the network to cover a wider range of journey types and distances. Overnight services could allow passengers to travel between distant cities while spending the journey in dedicated sleeping accommodation.
For passengers, the proposed expansion means more opportunities to access modern sleeper services as the new trainsets enter operation. The 50-train programme is expected to add capacity to the premium long-distance segment and complement existing conventional sleeper services. With production drawings now completed, attention will turn to manufacturing and the subsequent introduction of the trainsets into passenger service.
The expansion of Vande Bharat Sleeper services is expected to form an important part of Indian Railways' continuing modernisation programme, particularly for passengers seeking faster, more comfortable and upgraded overnight travel options.
