A live donor heart was transported 250 kilometres from Surat to Ahmedabad in around two-and-a-half hours through a specially coordinated “green corridor” involving the Vande Bharat Express, railway authorities, police teams, and medical professionals, helping save the life of a critically ill heart patient. The procedure marked the first time in India that a live donor heart was transported by train for a transplant. The donor heart began its journey from Surat on Friday morning and was carried aboard the Vande Bharat Express to Ahmedabad. The train, which normally departs Surat at 8:58 am and reaches Ahmedabad at 11:30 am, was part of a carefully planned medical transportation operation designed to ensure that the organ reached the recipient hospital within the required time window.
After arriving at Ahmedabad railway station, the organ was transported through a special green corridor created by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Gujarat Police to the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre. The coordinated route helped minimise delays caused by regular traffic and ensured that the medical team could quickly move the donor heart from the railway station to the operation theatre. The Ministry of Railways said the successful transportation involved close coordination between railway officials, law enforcement agencies, and healthcare teams. The operation required precise planning because heart transplants depend on strict time limits to preserve the viability of the donated organ. Any delay during transportation could significantly affect the chances of a successful transplant.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel congratulated the teams involved and said the donor heart was successfully transplanted into a patient at the institute, providing him with a new lease of life. He described the achievement as a major example of coordination between government agencies, medical professionals, and public infrastructure systems. The use of the Vande Bharat Express for organ transportation represents a significant development in India’s healthcare logistics. Traditionally, donor organs are transported by road or air depending on distance, availability, and urgency.
