Putin Sends Message of Solidarity to Mojtaba Khamenei Amid Ongoing US-Israel Strikes on Iran

Putin reaffirms Russia's partnership with Iran as Trump openly rejects Mojtaba Khamenei's leadership.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday expressed strong support for Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, reaffirming Moscow’s backing for Tehran during the ongoing regional conflict. The message came shortly after Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in strikes linked to the United States and Israel. Putin’s statement signals Russia’s continued alignment with Iran amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

In a direct message addressed to the new Iranian leader, Putin said Russia remained firmly committed to supporting Tehran. “I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” he wrote, adding that Russia had consistently maintained close ties with Iran. The Russian president further emphasised that Moscow considers Iran an important partner and would continue to stand by the country during the ongoing crisis.

Putin also acknowledged the difficult circumstances under which Mojtaba Khamenei has assumed the leadership role. In his message, he noted that leading the country during a time of military confrontation would require determination and resilience. “At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” Putin said, expressing confidence that Iran would navigate the challenges under its new leadership.

The statement from Moscow contrasts sharply with the position taken by Donald Trump, who earlier criticised Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment. Speaking to media outlets before the announcement was made official, Trump suggested that the new leader might not be acceptable to Washington. He stated that the United States preferred leadership in Iran that could “bring harmony and peace", signalling a clear divergence in global responses to the leadership transition in Tehran.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has largely remained out of the public spotlight for much of his life despite being the second-eldest son of Ali Khamenei. However, analysts have long considered him influential within Iran’s political and security establishment. His rise to the position of Supreme Leader comes at a moment when the political system created and controlled by his father faces one of the most serious challenges in its nearly five-decade history.

The broader conflict in the region continues to escalate despite the leadership transition in Iran. Israel has carried out additional strikes in central Iran and targeted Hezbollah-linked infrastructure in Beirut, while Iran has reportedly launched retaliatory attacks on Israel and on locations hosting US military bases in the Middle East. The humanitarian toll is also mounting, with reports indicating casualties across multiple countries, including the death of foreign nationals in a projectile strike in Saudi Arabia.
