Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, during the opening hours of the recent US-Israel strikes. At 56, Mojtaba, who spent most of his life quietly building influence within Iran’s security forces, clergy, and business elite, now faces enormous domestic unrest alongside external pressures from the US and Israel.
A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, Mojtaba has long been linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and has amassed significant international property holdings, earning him the label “agha-zadeh” for elites insulated from ordinary citizens’ hardships. Human rights groups estimate that at least 7,000 civilians were killed during January protests over living costs and anti-government unrest, highlighting the domestic opposition to his family’s rule.
The appointment, ratified by the Assembly of Experts, signals continuity of his father’s hardline policies, including prioritising Islamic principles and anti-US foreign policy. Analysts suggest Mojtaba will continue military operations, resist Western engagement, and consolidate IRGC control over state affairs. His selection also underscores divisions among Iran’s wartime leadership, with hardline clerics backing him while reformist factions had supported retaining an interim council.

Mojtaba’s public persona remains low-profile, but he has maintained influence through strategic alliances with intelligence bodies, clerical networks, and wealthy business associates. His global property empire, including luxury real estate in London and hotels across Europe, was reportedly facilitated via intermediaries and offshore holdings. US sanctions and UK restrictions have targeted figures connected to him, highlighting the international scrutiny accompanying his rise. Analysts note that while Mojtaba inherits his father’s legacy, the future of Iran’s regime remains uncertain amid ongoing conflict and domestic discontent.
