Punjab Woman Cop Suspended For Tying 5-Year-Old Granddaughter to Gate In Heat

Viral video shows Punjab ASI tying crying five-year-old granddaughter to a gate outside.

A woman assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police was suspended after she allegedly tied her five-year-old granddaughter to a gate at her residence and left the child exposed to scorching heat, officials said on Wednesday. The incident came to light after a video of the child crying and tied with cloth to a gate went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage and prompting swift disciplinary action from authorities.

According to police officials, the child was tied by her hands and feet to the gate using a cloth, while she cried continuously in distress under harsh weather conditions. The disturbing visuals were reportedly recorded by neighbours who heard the child’s cries and intervened to rescue her. They later untied the girl and ensured her safety before informing relevant authorities about the incident.

Officials said the accused ASI, identified as Sarabjit Kaur, is posted at a women’s helpdesk in Faridkot. Preliminary information suggests that the child’s parents are currently residing in Portugal and had left the five-year-old in the care of her grandmother. However, the reason behind the alleged act of restraint has not been officially established, and an inquiry is underway.

Following the circulation of the video, Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police Pragya Jain took immediate cognisance of the matter and ordered the suspension of the officer. Police stated that the act was deemed highly inappropriate, especially given her position in the law enforcement system, and warranted immediate departmental action.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Tarlochan Singh confirmed the suspension and said the officer resides in the Dogar Basti area of Faridkot. He added that despite her role in the police force, the alleged conduct was unacceptable and the case has been forwarded for further investigation. Authorities have also referred the matter to the Child Welfare Committee for appropriate action regarding the safety and care of the child.

Officials further said that the child has been safely removed from the situation and is currently under protective care. The incident has sparked strong public reaction, with calls for strict accountability and a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the alleged act.
