Punjab Police Strengthen Security in Amritsar Ahead of Operation Blue Star Anniversary

Punjab increases security deployment ahead of Operation Blue Star anniversary.

Punjab Police have placed Amritsar and surrounding areas on heightened alert ahead of the Operation Blue Star anniversary on June 6, deploying a large number of security personnel to maintain law and order during the sensitive period. Authorities have implemented a comprehensive security grid across the district to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents during commemorative events and gatherings.

Senior officials confirmed that Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha visited Amritsar to personally review the security arrangements. During his visit, he assessed force deployment and held discussions with field officers to ensure coordination among different units responsible for maintaining peace across the region.

Speaking to the media, Sinha said nearly 4,000 police personnel have been deployed across Amritsar district. This includes officers drawn from outside the district as well as local personnel placed on high alert. He added that the deployment was designed to ensure a visible security presence across key locations and sensitive areas.

To further strengthen the security framework, five companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have also been stationed in the city. Officials said these units are assisting the local police in monitoring crowd movement, maintaining vigilance, and responding quickly to any law and order situations that may arise during the anniversary period.

According to the Special DGP, extensive review meetings and ground-level inspections have been conducted over the past two days to finalise preparedness. He stated that around 2,000 local police personnel, along with 30 gazetted officers brought in from outside the district, are part of the overall deployment strategy to ensure layered security coverage.

June 6 marks the anniversary of Operation Blue Star, the military action carried out in 1984 when the Indian Army entered the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar to remove armed militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The operation, ordered by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, remains one of the most sensitive and debated events in India’s modern history. With annual commemorations often drawing public attention, authorities continue to maintain heightened security to ensure peace and stability across Punjab during this period.
