Pune Dam Water Levels: Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon Reach 100% Capacity
Pune's major reservoirs are full amid continued monsoon rainfall.
Three major reservoirs supplying water to Pune—Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon—have reached 100% of their storage capacity following sustained monsoon rainfall, prompting authorities to release water in a controlled manner. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a yellow alert for the Pune Ghats on August 3, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Officials are closely monitoring reservoir levels as rainfall continues across the catchment areas.
According to the latest reservoir data, Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon are at full capacity, while Temghar has reached 95.51% of its storage. Pawana Dam stands at 99.15%, and Mulshi Dam has filled up to 88.74%. To regulate inflows, authorities have maintained a discharge of 5,720 cusecs from Pawana Dam, while Mulshi Dam is releasing water at a rate of 6,200 cusecs.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has significantly increased the discharge from Khadakwasla Dam after heavy rainfall led to a rapid rise in water levels. An official notice issued on August 3 stated that the spillway discharge into the Mutha River was increased by 16,247 cusecs, taking the total release to 24,287 cusecs at 12 p.m. Officials added that the discharge rate may be revised further depending on rainfall intensity and incoming water from upstream catchments.

Authorities have advised residents living along the Mutha River and in low-lying areas to remain alert and strictly follow official advisories. People have been urged not to enter the riverbed and to immediately move any equipment, vehicles, belongings or livestock away from areas that may be affected by rising water levels. Emergency agencies continue to monitor the situation to minimise the risk of flooding as controlled water releases continue.
The IMD has forecast cloudy skies accompanied by light rain and thunderstorms in Pune city through August 6, with daytime temperatures expected to range between 23°C and 30°C. With the monsoon remaining active across the region, civic authorities are maintaining close surveillance of reservoir levels and weather conditions while urging the public to exercise caution and stay updated through official announcements.
