Probe Ordered Into C-Section Complications At Rajasthan Hospital After Multiple Cases

Complications after C-section deliveries prompt inquiry at Rajasthan hospital.

The Rajasthan government has ordered an investigation after six women developed serious complications following cesarean section (C-section) deliveries at PBM Hospital in Bikaner over the past fortnight, raising fresh concerns about maternal healthcare standards in the state. According to officials and people familiar with the matter, the women suffered excessive bleeding, severe infections, low platelet counts, kidney-related complications, and multiple organ dysfunction after undergoing C-section procedures. The cases have drawn particular attention because they come barely a month after five women died following C-section deliveries at a government hospital in Kota, prompting scrutiny of post-operative care protocols in public health facilities.

Sources said all six women, aged between 20 and 27, were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at PBM Hospital after their conditions deteriorated. Some patients reportedly required dialysis, while others received advanced critical care treatment. Relatives alleged that several of the women had initially been declared stable following surgery before developing serious complications within hours. Medical experts have noted similarities between the Bikaner cases and those reported earlier in Kota. In both instances, patients reportedly experienced a sudden drop in blood pressure, urinary complications, declining platelet counts, and severe infections within eight to ten hours of delivery.

The severity of the conditions led to intensive medical intervention, including dialysis and ventilator support in some cases. PBM Hospital superintendent Dr Bhikham Chand Ghiya, however, rejected direct comparisons between the Bikaner incidents and the deaths reported in Kota. He said that three of the affected patients had pre-existing medical complications, while another woman had been referred to the hospital in a critical condition. According to Ghiya, only one patient who underwent delivery in the hospital’s maternity wing subsequently required ICU admission. Dr Santosh Khajotia of PBM Hospital said it would be premature to attribute the complications solely to infection.

“Excessive blood loss during or after surgery can also lead to such complications. A detailed medical investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause,” she said. The inquiry is expected to examine surgical procedures, post-operative care, infection-control measures, and patient management protocols. Family members of the affected women have described alarming developments following the deliveries. Jubaida Bano, a relative of one patient, said the woman experienced continuous bleeding after surgery and was shifted to intensive care only after her condition worsened significantly. “We were told everything was normal after the operation, but later her condition suddenly became critical,” she said.

Another relative, Lekhram, said his wife complained of severe weakness and discomfort shortly after the operation and her health continued to deteriorate. Similar accounts have emerged from relatives of other patients, who said complications developed despite initial assurances that the women were recovering normally. The state government has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the incidents and determine whether there were any lapses in medical care. The findings are expected to play a crucial role in assessing whether systemic issues contributed to the complications and in recommending measures to strengthen maternal healthcare services across Rajasthan’s government hospitals.
