Health Authorities Investigate Six Newborn Deaths In Bangladesh Hospital
Bangladesh health officials are investigating six newborn deaths in a hospital.
Health authorities in Bangladesh have launched an investigation after six newborn babies died within hours of each other in the same hospital ward in Dhaka on Wednesday, in a rare and deeply distressing incident that has raised concerns over hospital conditions and neonatal care. The deaths occurred at Ad-Din Hospital, a private medical facility in the capital, where the infants—aged between one and three days—were being treated in the post-delivery ward. Hospital officials confirmed that all six newborns deteriorated rapidly within a short span of time and could not be revived despite emergency intervention.
According to hospital director Nahida Yasmin, one baby initially fell ill and was moved to the intensive care unit, but was later returned to the ward. Within hours, several others began showing signs of severe distress. “All were put on ventilators but could not be saved,” she said. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of death. However, early observations have pointed to possible environmental and infrastructural issues in the ward. A senior government health department official, Prabhat Chandra Biswas, noted that the air conditioning system in the unit was reportedly non-functional during the early hours of Wednesday, when temperatures in Dhaka were around 32°C.
“There is no alternative ventilation once the air conditioner is turned off,” he said, adding that conditions inside the ward may have become “suffocating” for the newborns. Health department spokesperson Zahid Raihan said preliminary information did not suggest any evidence of medical negligence or mistreatment. He added that a formal investigation has been initiated, including technical assessments of hospital equipment. “The Criminal Investigation Department is also testing whether there were any faults in the air conditioning or electrical systems,” he said.

The sudden deaths have caused widespread grief and anxiety among families at the hospital. Relatives of the deceased described moments of confusion and panic as the babies’ conditions worsened rapidly. “My granddaughter was perfectly okay until last night,” said one grieving relative, adding that the infant “turned blue one after another” before being taken to intensive care and later declared dead. Other families admitted they were now reconsidering continuing treatment at the facility. One parent, whose newborn has been in critical condition for nearly three weeks, said the incident had left them deeply uncertain about the care environment.
The hospital administration has stated that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing inquiry and will assist authorities in determining the cause of the tragedy. As investigations continue, officials have emphasized the need to examine both clinical and technical factors, including neonatal care protocols and hospital infrastructure. The incident has renewed scrutiny of healthcare standards in private medical facilities, particularly in high-risk neonatal wards. Authorities are expected to release preliminary findings after the initial technical and medical assessments are completed.
