President Murmu Inaugurates Param Vir Chakra Gallery at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Vijay Diwas
President Murmu launches gallery honouring India's 21 Param Vir Chakra recipients on Vijay Diwas.
President of India Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday inaugurated the Param Vir Dirgha at Rashtrapati Bhavan, a newly established gallery dedicated to India’s 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees. The gallery aims to educate visitors about the extraordinary courage and indomitable spirit of the nation’s war heroes who defended India with unmatched valor.
The inauguration coincided with Vijay Diwas, observed annually on December 16 to commemorate India’s decisive victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. The day serves as a tribute to the sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini during the liberation struggle.
The Param Vir Dirgha has replaced earlier portraits of British ADCs along the Rashtrapati Bhavan corridors, marking a symbolic shift from colonial imagery to honoring Indian national heroes. Officials stated that the initiative represents a step toward shedding the colonial mindset and embracing India’s rich cultural heritage and history.

“The gallery is also a tribute to our bravehearts who laid down their lives in service of the motherland,” the official release noted, emphasizing that the Param Vir Chakra is India’s highest military decoration awarded for acts of exceptional valor, courage, and self-sacrifice during wartime.
Recalling the heroism of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1971 war, the Indian Army highlighted that Vijay Diwas stands as a symbol of the historic victory achieved alongside the Mukti Bahini. This triumph not only reshaped India’s military history but also redrew the map of South Asia, giving birth to the independent nation of Bangladesh.
The Param Vir Dirgha is expected to inspire citizens and visitors, showcasing the legacy of India’s military heroes and promoting awareness of their extraordinary sacrifices. The gallery strengthens the connection between India’s history, culture, and the valorous deeds of its armed forces.
