Annually commemorated on December 16, Vijay Diwas pays solemn respect to the thousands of Indian soldiers who valiantly fought in the 1971 war, a 13-day conflict that not only liberated Bangladesh from oppressive rule but also demonstrated the superior strategic prowess and operational excellence of the Indian military establishment.
The war reached its historic conclusion with the instrument of surrender signed in Dhaka, where nearly 93,000 Pakistani soldiers, under the command of Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, formally laid down their arms before the victorious Indian forces and allied Mukti Bahini, marking one of the largest and most comprehensive military surrenders witnessed in the world since the end of the Second World War.
