Police Constable Dies After Equipment Falls at MMRDA Flyover in Mankhurd

Police constable Santosh Chavan killed after drilling machine falls at MMRDA construction site.

A tragic accident was reported in Maharashtra after a police constable lost his life at a construction site in Mumbai. The incident took place at an MMRDA flyover project in the Mankhurd area, where a heavy drilling machine reportedly fell on the officer. The accident has raised fresh concerns over worker and public safety around large infrastructure construction zones in the city.

The deceased constable has been identified as Santosh Chavan, who was attached to Nehru Nagar police station. According to reports, Chavan was on his way home when the fatal incident occurred. He was passing near the construction area when the machine suddenly collapsed, leaving little time to react. Emergency responders were alerted soon after the mishap.

Initial reports suggest that the crane carrying the drilling machine may have toppled because of unstable or uneven ground conditions. Authorities suspect that loose soil or a landslide-like shift at the site could have contributed to the accident. Investigators are now expected to examine whether safety norms, load management rules, and equipment placement guidelines were properly followed.

Mumbai Police said a case is being registered against the contractor linked to the construction project at Mankhurd police station. Officials are likely to question site supervisors and review permissions, safety logs, and machine operation records. If negligence is found, further legal action may follow against those responsible for the lapse.

The incident has shocked local residents and police personnel, especially because the victim was not a worker on duty at the site but a passerby returning home. As Mumbai continues rapid infrastructure expansion, the accident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety enforcement, better barricading, and stricter monitoring at active construction zones across the city.
