PM RAHAT: Cashless ₹1.5 Lakh Treatment Now Available for Every Road Accident Victim

PM RAHAT scheme provides cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh for 7 days to all road accident victims nationwide.

The Government of India has launched the PM RAHAT (Road Accident Victim Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment) scheme, aimed at providing cashless treatment to road accident victims. The initiative seeks to remove financial barriers during the “Golden Hour” — the critical first hour after an accident that can significantly improve survival outcomes.

Under the scheme, eligible victims can receive cashless treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for seven days from the date of the accident. For non-life-threatening cases, stabilisation treatment is covered for up to 24 hours, while life-threatening injuries may receive extended care up to 48 hours, verified through an integrated digital system.

PM RAHAT is closely integrated with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 112, allowing victims, Good Samaritans (Rah-Veer), or bystanders to dial 112 to locate the nearest approved hospital and request ambulance services. This coordination ensures faster access to medical care and better outcomes for accident victims.

Hospitals treating patients under PM RAHAT will receive reimbursements via the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF). If the accident involves an insured vehicle, insurance companies will cover payments, while costs in cases of uninsured vehicles or hit-and-run incidents will be borne by the government.

The State Health Agency will process approved claims within 10 days, ensuring hospitals are financially supported to provide uninterrupted treatment. This framework aims to reduce delays caused by payment issues and strengthen India’s emergency medical response infrastructure.

By guaranteeing timely, cashless treatment, PM RAHAT is expected to save lives and reduce the financial burden on road accident victims, marking a significant step forward in India’s healthcare and road safety initiatives.
