#BreakingNews: 1 Dead in Assam Kokrajhar Road Accident Violence – Internet Shut, Forces Deployed
One killed in Kokrajhar after road accident sparks Bodo-Adivasi violence, RAF deployed and internet suspended.
Violence erupted in Assam’s Kokrajhar district following clashes between members of the Bodo and Adivasi communities, resulting in the death of one person and widespread unrest. The situation deteriorated rapidly, prompting the state government to deploy the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and impose emergency restrictions to maintain law and order. Authorities described the situation as serious but under close monitoring.
The unrest began late Monday night after a vehicle carrying three Bodo men allegedly hit two Adivasi persons at Mansingh Road under the Karigaon police outpost. According to officials, the occupants of the vehicle were subsequently assaulted by local villagers, the vehicle was set ablaze, and one individual lost his life during the incident. This incident became the trigger for broader communal tensions.
On Tuesday, anger spilled onto the streets as members of both communities blocked the National Highway near Karigaon, burnt tyres, and set fire to several houses. A government office was torched, and the Karigaon police outpost came under attack, further escalating the crisis. Security forces struggled initially to disperse the mobs amid rising tensions.

In response, the Assam government deployed RAF personnel to Kokrajhar and adjoining sensitive areas to prevent further violence. Mobile data services were temporarily suspended in Kokrajhar and neighbouring Chirang districts to curb the spread of rumours, while voice calls and fixed-line broadband services remained functional. The Home Department said the decision followed a report from the district administration highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, currently abroad, said he was in constant touch with senior officials and appealed for calm through social media. Former Bodoland Territorial Council chief Pramod Boro also expressed deep concern and urged all communities to maintain peace. Authorities have appealed to citizens to show restraint as security forces continue efforts to restore normalcy.
