Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful address from the Red Fort on India’s 79th Independence Day, paying heartfelt tributes to the visionaries who crafted the nation’s Constitution, with a special emphasis on women leaders and Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.

Highlighting the contributions of women in the Constituent Assembly, Modi noted, “Our Nari Shakti also played an important role. Leaders like Hansa Mehta and Dakshayani Velayudhan made significant contributions in strengthening the Constitution of India.”

He also honored stalwarts such as Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan for their enduring legacy in shaping India’s foundational document.

Modi further commemorated Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, declaring him “the first one to sacrifice his life for the country’s constitution.” The government is marking Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary from July 6, 2025, to July 6, 2026, with a year-long celebration launched in Kolkata, his birthplace.

Organized by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with academic and civil society bodies, the tribute includes seminars, exhibitions, films, and youth outreach programs to highlight Mookerjee’s contributions to India’s political, educational, and cultural landscape, inspiring a renewed sense of nationalism and civilizational pride.

Modi’s address, set against the backdrop of the historic Red Fort, underscored the theme of Naya Bharat and the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. His tributes to the Constitution’s architects, particularly women and Mookerjee, reinforced the importance of their contributions to India’s democratic framework and national identity, resonating with the nation’s ongoing journey toward progress and unity.
