Karnataka CM Pays Tribute to Iconic Actress Saroja Devi

Siddaramaiah mourns legendary actress Saroja Devi.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah paid floral tribute to legendary actress B Saroja Devi, who passed away at 87 due to age-related illness at her Malleswaram residence in Bengaluru on Monday. Her last rites will be conducted with state honors in her native village, Dhashavara, in Channapatna Taluk, Mandya district, on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after visiting her home, Siddaramaiah called her demise “a major loss to the entire film industry.” He praised her 70-year career, noting, “Saroja Devi entered cinema at a tender age, earning the title ‘Abhinava Saraswati’ for her versatile roles in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi films.” She starred alongside icons like M G Ramachandran, N T Rama Rao, and Dr Rajkumar, bringing depth to historical and mythological roles in films like Kittur Rani Chennamma and Babruvahana.

“Saroja Devi’s contributions to Kannada cinema are immense,” Siddaramaiah said, recalling her warmth during their meetings and her memorable performances in films like Nyayave Devaru. He extended condolences on behalf of the Karnataka government, praying for her soul’s peace and strength for her family.

Born in Bengaluru on January 7, 1938, Saroja Devi debuted in the 1950s, featuring in over 180 films. Known for her elegance and powerful screen presence, she earned the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dr Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award. Condolences poured in from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, and film industry luminaries, celebrating her enduring legacy in Indian cinema.
