PM Modi’s Push to Revive Sanskrit Stuns Scholars

PM Modi champions Sanskrit with bold, transformative initiatives.

On World Sanskrit Day, observed annually on Shravan Purnima, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s decade-long commitment to revitalizing Sanskrit, the ancient language celebrated as an eternal source of knowledge and cultural heritage. In his address on August 9, 2025, Modi highlighted Sanskrit’s profound influence across diverse fields, including philosophy, science, literature, and spirituality, emphasizing its role as the backbone of India’s intellectual legacy.

PM Modi praised the tireless efforts of scholars, students, and educators dedicated to learning and promoting Sanskrit, urging global appreciation for their work. He outlined transformative initiatives, including the establishment of the Central Sanskrit University, which has expanded access to quality education in the language. Additionally, specialized centers for Sanskrit studies have been set up nationwide, supported by grants for scholars to advance research. A pioneering mission to digitize ancient Sanskrit manuscripts has made rare texts accessible to a global audience, benefiting countless students, researchers, and enthusiasts.

These efforts reflect Modi’s vision to bridge Sanskrit’s ancient wisdom with modern innovation. Once the language of Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Sanskrit is now largely confined to religious practices, but these initiatives aim to restore its prominence in academic and cultural spheres. By fostering digital archives and encouraging young learners, the government seeks to ensure Sanskrit’s relevance for future generations, sparking a renewed global interest in India’s linguistic heritage.
