PM Modi to Release new Bhupen Hazarika Biography, Highlighting Legacy for Youth
Author Anuradha Sarma showcases Hazarika’s versatile art, philosophy, and social impact.
Sahitya Akademi awardee Anuradha Sarma Pujari's biography, 'Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika,' aims to introduce the multifaceted genius of the legendary Assamese artist to today's youth, who often remember him solely as a singer.
The book, written in Assamese and set for translation into all recognized Indian languages, will be released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Hazarika's birth centenary celebrations in Guwahati on Saturday. Pujari emphasizes that the work reveals Hazarika's philosophy and diverse contributions, from music and films to poetry and journalism, which elevated Northeast India's cultural heritage on national and international stages.
Pujari told PTI that younger generations, born after 1980, should appreciate Hazarika's universal appeal and intellectual depth, evident in his songs that addressed social issues like caste discrimination, war, and regional harmony. Despite lacking modern media like television or social media in remote areas, his compositions reached and inspired tribal communities. The author highlights Hazarika's commitment to social change, noting he never charged for performances until moving to Kolkata, viewing his art as a tool for transformation rather than profit.
Hazarika's patriotism and global perspective are central themes. After studying in the US, securing a UNESCO job, and marrying into a wealthy family, he returned to Assam, enduring hardships to promote his homeland's culture. His works reflected universal struggles like racism and inequality, remaining relevant in today's crisis-ridden world. Pujari, who knew Hazarika for nearly three decades, was commissioned by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in March to write the 250-page book in a short timeframe.

While not a comprehensive biography, the book uncovers unique aspects of Hazarika's life to instill values in young artists, encouraging them to stay rooted in cultural traditions while pursuing societal impact. Pujari describes the project as a privilege, blending emotion and literary insight to portray the maestro's enduring influence.
