Om Birla to Inaugurate Women Parliamentarians Conference in Tirupati
Lok Sabha Speaker to launch Tirupati conference.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will kick off a landmark two-day national conference on the empowerment of women parliamentarians and state legislators in Tirupati, starting September 14. The event, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Andhra Pradesh, will bring together prominent leaders, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and other dignitaries, to deliberate on advancing women’s roles in governance.
The conference, hosted by the Committee on Empowerment of Women Parliament and State and Union Territory Legislatures, will be chaired by Birla during its inaugural and concluding sessions, according to Andhra Pradesh Legislature Secretary General Prasanna Kumar Suryadevara. The parliamentary committee, led by Rajahmundry MP D Purandeswari, comprises 20 Lok Sabha members and 10 Rajya Sabha members, while Andhra Pradesh’s joint committee, chaired by G Charita Reddy, includes three Legislative Council members and nine from the Legislative Assembly.
Suryadevara explained that state-level women’s empowerment committees typically operate within their jurisdictions, often visiting other states to exchange best practices and raise awareness. The Tirupati conference marks the third in a series of nationwide gatherings initiated by Birla to unite these committees for focused discussions. Previous meetings included the Estimate Committee in Maharashtra two months ago and the SC/ST Committee in Bhubaneswar in August.

The conference will feature in-depth discussions on two to three key themes related to women’s empowerment, with Birla delivering the inaugural address. To ensure manageable participation, each state has been asked to nominate a four-member delegation. These representatives will engage in robust deliberations, sharing insights and strategies to strengthen women’s representation and influence in legislative processes.
The event is set to culminate on September 15 with a formal declaration, outlining actionable outcomes to further empower women lawmakers across India. The initiative underscores the growing emphasis on gender equality in governance, aiming to foster collaboration and learning among state and national committees. For Andhra Pradesh, hosting this prestigious conference is a moment of pride, spotlighting Tirupati as a hub for progressive dialogue on women’s leadership in the political sphere.
