PM Modi To Roll Out Development Schemes In Tarakeswar, West Bengal

PM Modi to launch development schemes from Tarakeswar, West Bengal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s selection of Tarakeswar as the venue for launching a series of development and welfare schemes in West Bengal is closely linked to the town’s historical, political, and strategic significance, particularly in the context of the state’s pre-independence partition debates and its cultural identity.

Tarakeswar holds historical importance due to its association with a key 1947 meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha. At that gathering, leaders reportedly authorised Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a prominent political figure and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, to take steps advocating for the partition of Bengal. This historical episode is often referenced in discussions on Bengal’s partition and its political legacy.

The political backdrop of the time included sharp differences over Bengal’s future, with then provincial leadership under Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy reportedly favouring a united Bengal, while others argued for partition along communal lines. Mookerjee’s opposition to certain proposals eventually contributed to the shaping of West Bengal as part of independent India. Against this historical context, Tarakeswar is viewed by some political observers as symbolically linked to the broader narrative of Bengal’s partition-era politics.

In contemporary terms, the Prime Minister’s visit to Tarakeswar is also being positioned as part of the government’s outreach in West Bengal under the “Paschimbanga Divas” programme. The theme for this year’s observance is “West Bengal: Heritage, Harmony and Development,” and the event will feature the launch of multiple central government initiatives focused on infrastructure, agriculture, rural development, fisheries, and animal husbandry.

A major highlight of the programme is the rollout of the 23rd instalment of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, under which over ₹18,880 crore will be transferred nationwide to more than 9.44 crore farmers. In West Bengal alone, more than 45 lakh beneficiaries are expected to receive over ₹900 crore, further expanding cumulative support under the scheme to over ₹15,000 crore in the state since its inception in 2019.

Alongside financial transfers, several agricultural and rural development initiatives will be launched, including the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, AgriStack under the Digital Agriculture Mission, the National Mission on Natural Farming, and the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana. Officials say these programmes aim to improve productivity, strengthen digital agricultural services, expand insurance coverage, and promote sustainable farming practices across multiple districts in West Bengal.
