Hydrogen train marks milestone in green railway technology.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Haryana, Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh on July 17, where he will inaugurate a series of infrastructure and development projects, including India’s first hydrogen-powered train. The train, which will operate between Jind and Sonipat, marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to adopt cleaner and more sustainable transportation technologies.
Powered entirely by hydrogen fuel, the train is expected to offer an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional rail services by reducing carbon emissions and promoting green mobility. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the selection of Haryana as the launch site reflects the state's growing role in innovation and infrastructure development. He described the project as a major step towards modernising India’s railway network while advancing the government’s clean energy agenda. The Chief Minister also urged citizens to participate in the event, adding that extensive eco-friendly arrangements have been made for the programme.
During his visit to Jind, the Prime Minister will also dedicate several major development projects to the people of Haryana. According to state officials, these include the inauguration of two new Ram Medical Colleges in Bhiwani and Narnaul, the 10-kilometre Kurukshetra Elevated Railway Track, the Ambala–Kala Amb Greenfield Four-Lane Corridor, the Haryana stretch of the Delhi–Katra Expressway, and the Jind–Gohana NH-352A project. Modi will also launch the expansion of the Hisar–Barwala Four-Lane Road, the Bikaner–Siwani–Sonipat Road Project, and lay the foundation stone for a modern Sikh Museum in Kurukshetra through virtual mode.

The Kurukshetra Elevated Railway Track is expected to ease traffic congestion by eliminating delays at several railway crossings, while the new road infrastructure projects are aimed at improving regional connectivity and supporting economic growth. Haryana Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi said the Prime Minister will address a large public gathering at Jind, from where multiple projects across the state will be inaugurated virtually, benefiting transportation, healthcare and public infrastructure.
Following his Haryana visit, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Punjab, where he is expected to inaugurate railway projects, including the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He will also visit Chandigarh to inaugurate the Advanced Neurosciences Centre and the Mother and Child Health Centre at PGIMER, along with a 2,400-seat multi-purpose auditorium at Panjab University’s South Campus. The multi-state visit underscores the Centre’s continued focus on expanding transport infrastructure, strengthening healthcare facilities and promoting sustainable development across northern India.
