PM Modi to Launch Hydrogen Train on Jind-Sonipat Route Tomorrow

PM Modi to launch India's first hydrogen-powered train from Haryana.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off India's first hydrogen-powered train from Haryana's Jind on July 17, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to adopt cleaner and more sustainable transportation technologies. The train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route as part of a pilot project by Indian Railways aimed at promoting hydrogen-based mobility. The initiative is expected to strengthen India's push towards energy efficiency and support its long-term net-zero carbon emission goals.

The hydrogen-powered train represents India's entry into a select group of countries, including Germany, Japan, China and the United States, that are exploring hydrogen fuel cell technology for railway transportation. According to an official statement, hydrogen-powered rail systems are still in the early stages of global adoption, with only a limited number of nations currently operating or testing the technology as an alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based rail networks.

To support the project, Indian Railways has established an indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the necessary licence for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas at the site. The facility is equipped with hydrogen compression systems, technical support infrastructure and standby equipment to ensure reliable refuelling operations for the train.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as the by-product. This makes it a cleaner alternative to diesel-powered railway systems by significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The technology is increasingly being recognised worldwide as a promising solution for environmentally sustainable public transportation.

Indian Railways has also incorporated multiple safety measures into the project. Hydrogen leak detectors, flame detection systems and other safety sensors have been installed across the production, storage and dispensing facilities. Regular inspections, maintenance schedules and operational audits have been planned to ensure safe functioning. The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has approved the operation and maintenance manuals for both the hydrogen train set and the associated hydrogen plant.

During the initial phase of operations, trained technical personnel will accompany the train to monitor its performance and ensure smooth operations. The maintenance facility at Shakurbasti will operate under comprehensive safety protocols, including round-the-clock monitoring of the hydrogen refuelling system and deployment of certified staff for critical tasks. The launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train marks a major step in Indian Railways' transition towards cleaner transport solutions while showcasing the country's growing focus on sustainable infrastructure and technological innovation.
