PM Modi Stresses Fulfilling Constitutional Duties, Honouring First-Time Voters

PM Modi urges citizens to fulfil duties, celebrate Constitution Day, and honor first-time voters turning 18.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday marked the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution by releasing an open letter to citizens, calling for renewed commitment to constitutional duties and urging the nation to especially honor first-time voters as symbols of democratic vitality.

In his message released on Samvidhan Divas, Modi paid rich tributes to the members of the Constituent Assembly led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, describing the Constitution as a “living document” that has guided India through seven decades of challenges while safeguarding unity, justice, and equality. He invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy that rights emanate from duties, stating that true progress—social, economic, and national—rests on citizens actively performing the duties enshrined in Part IV-A of the Constitution rather than merely asserting Fundamental Rights.

The Prime Minister placed particular emphasis on voting as the foremost democratic duty, urging every eligible citizen to participate in elections without fail. To instill this value early, he proposed that schools, colleges, and educational institutions across the country celebrate Constitution Day each year by felicitating students who have turned or are turning 18, recognizing them as the newest guardians of India’s democracy, and encouraging their maiden vote.

Modi concluded by asserting that a duty-conscious society is the surest foundation for realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, calling upon people from all walks of life—youth, women, farmers, professionals, and senior citizens—to pledge renewed allegiance to constitutional ideals on this day. The letter has been widely circulated through government channels and is being read out at thousands of Constitution Day events being held nationwide.
