PM Modi Offers Condolences After Indian Tourists Die In Vietnam Tragedy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the death of Indian nationals in a tragic boat accident near Phu Quoc island in Vietnam. At least 15 people were reported killed after a speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized, with rescue operations and investigations continuing.
In a message shared on X, Prime Minister Modi offered condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident. He said Indian officials were in close contact with Vietnamese authorities and that the Indian Embassy and Consulate were extending all possible assistance to the affected families.
The accident occurred when a tourist vessel operated by Ocean Pear Island Company capsized while travelling from Hon May Rut to An Thoi Port. The boat was reportedly operating around 25 kilometres from Phu Quoc Airport when it overturned at around 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, approximately 400 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai.

According to local authorities, the vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members at the time of the incident. Initial reports stated that passengers were thrown into the sea after the boat overturned, while nearby tourist boats rushed to the location and helped rescue several people from the water.
Rescue teams continued operations following the accident, while authorities began investigating the cause of the capsizing. A rescue boat operator who reached the site shortly after the incident said some passengers trapped inside the overturned vessel could not be saved in time.
Phu Quoc, one of Vietnam’s fastest-growing tourist destinations, has witnessed a significant rise in visitor numbers in recent years. The island recorded around 5.7 million visitors in the first half of 2026, marking a 30 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, according to the provincial Department of Tourism. Authorities are continuing rescue efforts and gathering details as the investigation progresses.
