PM Modi: Ethical AI Must Respect Data Sovereignty and Serve Humanity

PM Modi highlights Aspirational India's role in AI's global journey at India AI Impact Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for an “Aspirational India” while underlining the risks of unethical AI use. Speaking at the Leaders’ Plenary session of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, he called for a collective roadmap to ensure AI benefits society responsibly.

Modi highlighted that AI carries limitless potential for unethical behavior, placing significant responsibility on companies and governments. “The right impact comes only when we take the right decisions at the right time, with the right intention,” he said, invoking the teachings of Lord Buddha on right action and understanding.

He outlined three pillars for ethical AI: respecting data sovereignty through clear frameworks for AI training, establishing transparent safety rules, and embedding human values into technological applications. Modi stressed that while technology is powerful, its direction must be guided by humans.

The prime minister cited India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as an example of human-centered digital infrastructure. He noted how UPI has facilitated seamless payments, even under challenging circumstances, and has played a crucial role in bridging the digital divide across the country.

Modi emphasized that India’s digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar and UPI, is designed as a medium of service rather than a tool of power. “Technology is not a means of power, but a medium of service,” he said, highlighting India’s efforts to share this framework globally.

Closing his remarks, Modi urged the global AI community to expand ethical norms and frameworks. He stressed that AI must remain a tool for societal benefit, supporting economic growth, social development, and inclusive opportunities for all citizens.
