PM Modi Emphasizes 'Made in India' Defense, Citing Russian Collaboration at UP Trade Show
PM Modi reaffirms ties with Russia and pushes for self-reliance amid U.S. tariff tensions at UP trade show.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the enduring “time-tested” partnership between India and Russia during his address at the UP International Trade Show in Greater Noida, where Russia was the international partner. His remarks, highlighting deep defence cooperation, come against the backdrop of strained India-U.S. relations, fueled by the Trump administration’s imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports and concerns over India’s continued oil trade with Moscow. Modi’s focus on strengthening bilateral ties through the trade show underscores India’s strategic balancing act in a complex global landscape.
Central to Modi’s address was the clarion call for Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), a vision he reiterated as critical for national growth. “A country like India can no longer afford to depend on anyone,” he declared, urging stakeholders to manufacture products domestically.
Highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s role in this transformation, Modi noted the state’s burgeoning defence corridor and its production of weapons like BrahMos missiles. He also announced the upcoming production of AK-203 rifles in a factory established with Russian collaboration, reinforcing India’s push to reduce external dependence in its armed forces.
Modi showcased Uttar Pradesh as a hub for investment, citing its robust network of millions of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and promising comprehensive support to investors. “In India, we are developing a vibrant defence sector, creating an ecosystem where every component bears the mark of ‘Made in India,’” he stated.
The Prime Minister’s pitch for self-reliance aligns with efforts to bolster indigenous manufacturing, particularly in defence, as a counter to global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions.

Despite international uncertainties, including trade frictions with the U.S., Modi emphasized India’s resilient economic growth as a magnet for global investors. The trade show served as a platform to showcase India’s manufacturing capabilities and deepen ties with Russia, a key partner in defence and energy. Modi’s remarks signal a resolute commitment to self-reliance and strategic partnerships, positioning India to navigate global challenges while fostering domestic innovation and economic strength.
