PM Modi Clarifies Save-Fuel, Work-From-Home Appeal Is Not Austerity Measure
PM Modi says appeal not austerity but efficiency drive.
The Union government has clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to conserve fuel, adopt work-from-home arrangements where feasible, and reduce non-essential foreign exchange expenditure should not be interpreted as an “austerity drive,” stating that no formal policy of spending cuts has been introduced.
According to government sources, the use of the term “austerity” in media reports is economically inaccurate, as it typically refers to policy-driven reductions in public expenditure, subsidies, or welfare commitments. Officials stressed that the current approach does not involve any cuts in government spending or changes to ongoing development programmes.
The clarification comes after the Prime Minister’s remarks at a public event in Hyderabad, where he encouraged citizens and institutions to focus on fuel conservation and adopt more efficient consumption patterns in the context of global economic uncertainty. He also urged reduced reliance on non-essential imports and discretionary spending.

Officials further explained that the appeal is primarily behavioural in nature, aimed at encouraging responsible consumption rather than enforcing fiscal tightening measures. They said the government continues to maintain its capital expenditure targets, welfare schemes, and subsidy allocations without any reduction.Government sources emphasised that describing such appeals as austerity measures may create confusion about the Centre’s economic strategy.
They noted that India’s current policy framework continues to prioritise growth, investment, and welfare support while simultaneously encouraging energy efficiency and prudent resource use.The clarification seeks to distinguish between voluntary public advisories and formal economic policy changes, underscoring that the government’s messaging is focused on resilience and conservation rather than budgetary contraction.
