Gaurav Gogoi Writes To Amit Shah Over Pattern Of Racial Attacks In Delhi
Congress MP urges Home Minister to strengthen safeguards after repeated incidents in Delhi.
Congress Member of Parliament and Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressing concern over repeated incidents of racial harassment and attacks against people from Northeast India in the national capital. In his letter, Gogoi highlighted recent cases of alleged abuse and violence involving individuals from the Northeast, stating that such incidents point to a continuing pattern of discrimination. He urged the Home Minister to strengthen institutional mechanisms to ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens, particularly those from the Northeast residing in Delhi.
A key case cited in the correspondence involved an alleged incident at Nehru Place on May 10, where two women from Assam and Bihar were reportedly molested, assaulted, and subjected to racial abuse by a group of men. According to the complaint referenced in the letter, the women were initially targeted with catcalling and derogatory remarks before the situation escalated into physical violence in the early hours.

Gogoi also referred to other recent incidents in Delhi, including an alleged assault on a lawyer from Manipur and her transwoman friend in South Delhi in March, as well as another case in February involving three women from Arunachal Pradesh in Malviya Nagar. He stated that these were not isolated occurrences but reflected a broader and “deeply troubling pattern” of prejudice and profiling.
In his letter, the MP recalled earlier cases of violence involving people from the Northeast, including the death of Nido Tania in 2014 and the reported death of Tripura student Anjel Chakma in 2025. He said such repeated incidents highlight the need for stronger enforcement of existing protections and more effective institutional responses.
While acknowledging measures such as helplines and sensitisation initiatives introduced by authorities, Gogoi noted that recurring cases indicate gaps in implementation. He urged the government to improve accountability, expand awareness of support systems, and ensure swift legal action in cases of racial harassment, stressing that Delhi must reflect constitutional values of equality, dignity, and security for all citizens.
