Piyush Goyal Announces Inter-Ministerial Group to Monitor West Asia Developments
India forms inter-ministerial group to monitor West Asia crisis, ensuring minimal impact on trade.
The Indian government has formed an inter-ministerial group to closely monitor developments in the Middle East amid escalating regional tensions, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday. The group is tasked with assessing potential vulnerabilities in shipping, logistics, exports, and critical imports, and is meeting daily to coordinate government action.
The announcement comes as exporters have expressed concerns over the potential impact of rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly following joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. These developments have raised apprehensions about disruptions to trade and supply chains affecting Indian businesses.
Addressing a post-Budget webinar, Goyal emphasized the government’s proactive approach: “We have set up an inter-ministerial group that meets on a daily basis and is closely monitoring the developments in West Asia to assess any vulnerabilities — in our shipping, logistics, export or even critical imports, and we will coordinate with inter-ministerial actions.”

During the group’s inaugural meeting on Tuesday, representatives from various ministries put forward recommendations to mitigate risks. Goyal noted that the government would review these suggestions and continue to seek input from exporters and stakeholders through the Ministry of Commerce to minimize potential disruptions.
The formation of this group reflects India’s focus on safeguarding its trade interests amid global geopolitical uncertainties. By coordinating closely across ministries, the government aims to ensure that economic activities, particularly in key sectors, remain resilient in the face of external shocks.
With tensions in the region showing no immediate signs of easing, the inter-ministerial group will continue daily monitoring and provide updates to policymakers, helping India respond swiftly to any emerging challenges in trade or critical imports.
