Outrage in Kohima: Women Rally Against Brutal Attack on Mother of Four

Women in Kohima protest brutal attack on mother of four, demanding justice and safety reforms.

A powerful protest rally, led by the Northern Angami Women Organisation (NAWO), took place in Kohima on Saturday, uniting people from diverse backgrounds, predominantly women, to condemn the brutal attempted rape and assault of a mother of four. The rally, held at Razhu Point, saw shops and businesses across the state capital shuttered in solidarity, reflecting the community’s outrage over the July 16 incident near Botsa village.

The 19-year-old accused, a resident of a Kohima district village, allegedly ambushed the victim as she returned from her field, attacking her with a knife in an attempt to rape and kill her. The woman sustained multiple stab wounds to her neck, arm, and behind her ear before a passerby intervened, forcing the assailant to flee. Local youths later apprehended the suspect, who is now in judicial custody.

Protesters, carrying placards and banners, marched to the deputy commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum demanding justice and the harshest legal punishment for the accused. NAWO described the attack as a premeditated crime, emphasizing its impact on the safety and dignity of all women. “This cowardly and inhumane act is not just an assault on one woman but an attack on the safety and dignity of all women,” the memorandum stated. The organization called for a thorough investigation, urged authorities to deny bail to the accused, and highlighted the need for a robust criminal justice system to address the rising acquittals in crimes against women.

NAWO also demanded protective measures for the victim and her family, asserting that the accused “does not deserve a place in a civilized society.” While expressing faith in law enforcement, the group stressed the urgency of visible and swift justice to restore trust and ensure accountability. The protest underscores growing concerns over women’s safety in Nagaland, galvanizing calls for systemic reforms to combat gender-based violence.
