Muslim Cleric's Shocking Remarks Against MP Dimple Yadav Ignite Firestorm

A Muslim cleric's derogatory comments about SP MP Dimple Yadav spark NDA protests and an FIR in Uttar Pradesh.

A firestorm of controversy has erupted following alleged misogynistic remarks by Muslim cleric Maulana Sajid Rashid targeting Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Dimple Yadav. The comments, made during a televised debate, prompted outrage from NDA MPs, who staged a protest in the Parliament complex, while an FIR was filed in Uttar Pradesh against the cleric.

The cleric reportedly made offensive remarks about Dimple Yadav’s attire, comparing her to another SP MP, Iqra Hasan, during a discussion at a mosque. The comments drew sharp condemnation across social media and from prominent women MPs, including BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj and Congress’ Renuka Chowdhury.

NDA MPs, particularly women, gathered near Makar Dwar in the Parliament House complex, chanting slogans like, “Nari shakti ka apman, nahin sahega Hindustan” (India will not tolerate insults to women’s power). Swaraj slammed the remarks as “utterly deplorable” and questioned the silence of SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple’s husband, and the broader Opposition.

“Is this the kind of rhetoric the Opposition endorses? It’s shameful that such a vile comment was made against a sitting MP, yet her party remains mute,” Swaraj told PTI Videos. She accused the Opposition of favoring “appeasement politics” over women’s dignity, vowing that the NDA would stand up for all women, including Dimple Yadav.

Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury also denounced the cleric’s remarks, stating, “This exposes their backward mindset. How dare anyone speak this way about Dimple Yadav or any woman? Such people have no place in civilized discourse.”

JD(U) MP Lovely Anand demanded a public apology from the cleric and urged Akhilesh Yadav to support his wife publicly. “His silence is deafening. Standing by Dimple would inspire confidence in women nationwide,” Anand told PTI.

In response, Dimple Yadav acknowledged the NDA’s support but pointed out their selective outrage. “It’s heartening to see action now, but where was this unity during the horrific violence in Manipur? Genuine concern for women should be consistent, not selective,” she told reporters in Parliament.

In Lucknow, an FIR was lodged against Rashidi at Vibhuti Khand police station on Sunday, following a complaint by local resident Pravesh Yadav. The FIR accuses Rashidi of making “inflammatory and anti-women” remarks aimed at inciting communal tension. It invokes sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges for insulting a woman’s modesty, promoting enmity between groups, and undermining national integration, alongside IT Act provisions for circulating the remarks online.

Pravesh Yadav’s complaint described the cleric’s statements as “an attack on women’s dignity” and accused him of harboring an “anti-national mindset” intended to disrupt India’s social harmony. “Such remarks not only degrade women but also threaten the nation’s unity and peace,” he stated.

A senior police official confirmed that the case is under investigation, with further action to be determined based on evidence. The controversy continues to fuel heated debates, with calls for accountability growing louder across political and social spheres.
