On Samvidhan Diwas, PM Modi Reminds Indians of Constitutional Duties and Historical Milestones

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Indian Constitution as a "sacred document" guiding the nation's progress on Wednesday, the 76th anniversary of its adoption, urging citizens in an open letter to prioritize constitutional duties to realize the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and strengthen democracy through active participation. Marking Samvidhan Divas, Modi reflected on his own journey, stating, "It is the power of our Constitution that enabled a person like me, coming from a humble and economically disadvantaged family, to serve as the Head of the Government continuously for over 24 years." He paid tribute to the framers, including Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Constituent Assembly under Dr. Rajendra Prasad, emphasizing that every action must "strengthen it and further national goals and interests."

Modi contrasted his government's initiatives with past oversights, recalling that in 2010, the Constitution's 60th anniversary "did not receive the attention it deserved at a national level." He highlighted the 2015 launch of Constitution Day, the Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra in Gujarat where the document was paraded on an elephant, and the 75th anniversary celebrations with special Parliament sessions and nationwide programs that drew record participation. This year's observance gains added significance as the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel—credited with India's unification and inspiring the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A—and tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda, whose legacy fuels empowerment efforts for Adivasi communities. Modi also noted the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, underscoring themes of courage, compassion, and unity.

Drawing from Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy that "rights flow from the performance of duties," Modi invoked Article 51A's Fundamental Duties as the bedrock for social and economic advancement, warning that policies shaped today will define generations ahead of the Constitution's centenary in 2049. He called for universal voter turnout as a democratic imperative, proposing schools and colleges honor first-time 18-year-old voters during Samvidhan Divas to instill lifelong commitment to national values. "When we inspire our youth with a sense of responsibility and pride, they will remain committed to the values of democracy throughout their lives. This sense of commitment is the foundation of a strong nation," he wrote.
