Omar Abdullah Urges Centre To Clarify Roadmap For Jammu And Kashmir Statehood
Omar Abdullah criticises BJP over delayed J&K statehood restoration promise.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government over the delay in restoring statehood to the Union Territory, questioning whether its assurances on the issue held any credibility. He made the remarks while addressing a public rally in the Nowshera border area of Rajouri district.
Abdullah said there has been no clear timeline or roadmap from the Centre regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to repeated statements from BJP leaders that the decision would be taken “at the right time,” he asked what that phrase actually meant and urged the government to clearly define the conditions required for the transition.
The Chief Minister said that promises made by the ruling party had been repeated in multiple forums, including Parliament, court proceedings, election campaigns and public rallies, but had not yet been fulfilled. He questioned whether such assurances should be considered meaningful if they are not implemented, and called for clarity similar to structured benchmarks used in academic evaluations.

Abdullah reiterated that his government was fulfilling its commitments to the public, while asserting that the promise of restoring statehood remained unfulfilled. He said voters across political lines had supported elections in the expectation that Jammu and Kashmir’s status would eventually be restored.
He also remarked that the conversion of Jammu and Kashmir from a state into a Union Territory was widely perceived by people as a setback. According to him, the electorate had voted in anticipation that the changes introduced in recent years would eventually lead to the reinstatement of full statehood.
The Chief Minister further said that the central government had previously outlined a sequence of steps—delimitation, elections, and then statehood—but argued that the final step has yet to be taken. He pointed out that both parliamentary and assembly elections have already been conducted since the reorganisation, yet statehood restoration has not followed.
Abdullah also touched upon issues related to delimitation and representation, alleging that earlier exercises had political implications. He said his party would continue to raise such concerns and hold the government accountable, adding that public questioning on these issues had made the ruling party uncomfortable. He concluded by reiterating that his party would persist in demanding clarity and fulfilment of promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding statehood restoration.
