MoPNG To Hold Stakeholder Meet On Flex Fuel Vehicle Roadmap In India Today

Government discusses flex fuel vehicles to expand ethanol blending use.

The Government of India is considering a stronger push toward flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) as part of its broader strategy to expand ethanol usage in the transport sector and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, according to sources.

A key stakeholder meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) to discuss a roadmap for introducing and scaling up flex fuel vehicle adoption in the country. The meeting, set to begin at 3:30 pm, will be chaired by the Additional Secretary of the ministry and will include participation from oil marketing companies, automobile manufacturers, and other industry stakeholders.

India currently operates under an E20 ethanol blending programme, under which petrol is blended with 20 per cent ethanol. However, the government is now exploring a transition toward vehicles capable of running on much higher ethanol blends, potentially up to 85 per cent, through flex fuel technology.

Officials are expected to discuss policy frameworks, manufacturing readiness, and infrastructure requirements needed to support such a transition. The move is seen as part of a broader effort to deepen ethanol adoption across the transport ecosystem while also addressing long-term energy security concerns.

Sources indicate that global geopolitical tensions, including ongoing developments in the Middle East, have added urgency to India’s efforts to diversify fuel sources and reduce vulnerability to fluctuations in crude oil supply and prices. Ethanol-based fuels are being viewed as a key alternative in this strategy.

If implemented, the shift toward flex fuel vehicles would mark a significant change in India’s automotive and energy landscape, requiring coordinated action between the government, fuel suppliers, and automobile manufacturers to ensure compatibility, availability, and consumer adoption. The discussions on Monday are expected to set the tone for future policy direction in this segment.
