Omar Abdullah To Reshuffle Cabinet Before Delhi Protest For Statehood Restoration

Omar Abdullah plans cabinet reshuffle ahead of Delhi statehood protest.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that a cabinet expansion and reshuffle will be carried out before a proposed protest in Delhi demanding the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory. The announcement comes ahead of key political developments planned by the ruling National Conference in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah said that two major political events are being prepared simultaneously, including internal government restructuring and a public demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The protest is expected to be part of a broader campaign pressing the central government for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

He added that the party is currently finalising its strategy for the proposed demonstration, which is scheduled to coincide with the opening of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. A key meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, chaired by party president Farooq Abdullah, is underway to decide organisational roles and representation for the event.

According to the Chief Minister, the cabinet reshuffle decision was taken after internal discussions, including a recent meeting in Dachigam where concerns were raised about the functioning of certain ministries. He said the restructuring aims to improve administrative efficiency and strengthen coordination between elected representatives and the government.

Omar Abdullah also acknowledged feedback from party legislators who reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over accessibility of some ministers and responsiveness to public issues. He indicated that these concerns had contributed to the decision to review the composition of the Council of Ministers, marking the first major reshuffle since the government assumed office.

The planned cabinet changes and political mobilisation around the statehood demand are expected to shape the next phase of governance and opposition dynamics in the region. The developments come at a politically sensitive time, with the National Conference preparing to intensify its campaign both within Jammu and Kashmir and at the national level.
