Omar Abdullah Discusses J&K Statehood Restoration With PM Modi In Delhi

Omar Abdullah raises Jammu and Kashmir statehood issue with PM Modi.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday, during which he raised several key issues concerning the Union Territory, including the long-pending demand for the restoration of statehood.

During the meeting, Abdullah reportedly urged the central government to take early steps toward restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a demand that has remained a major political issue since the region was reorganised as a Union Territory. He also discussed broader concerns related to the region’s economy, development pace, infrastructure expansion, and employment generation.

In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said he had discussed matters of importance to Jammu and Kashmir with the Prime Minister, including statehood restoration, economic conditions, and tourism promotion. He also congratulated the Prime Minister on completing 12 uninterrupted years in office, describing the meeting as focused on developmental priorities for the region.

The issue of statehood restoration has been repeatedly raised by the Jammu and Kashmir government. In its first cabinet meeting in October 2024, the Abdullah-led administration passed a resolution calling for the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in its original form. The resolution described the move as essential for restoring constitutional rights and supporting what it termed a broader process of political and social healing.

Following the cabinet decision, copies of the resolution were formally submitted to the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Defence Minister, and other senior central leaders. However, despite continued political engagement, there has been no official timeline or concrete announcement regarding the restoration process.

The central government, represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has maintained that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time, as previously indicated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, though no specific schedule has been outlined.

Abdullah’s latest meeting underscores the continued dialogue between the Union Territory administration and the Centre, with both sides expected to remain engaged on issues of governance, development, and constitutional status in the months ahead.
