Omar Abdullah Shifts Alliance Meeting Venue To Dachigam Amid Internal Political Concerns

CM shifts alliance meeting venue amid rising internal dissent.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday shifted a scheduled meeting with ruling National Conference (NC) legislators and supporting independent MLAs from his official residence at Gupkar in Srinagar to Dachigam National Park in the Harwan area, triggering political speculation and curiosity. The meeting, originally planned at the CM’s residence, was attended by MLAs and MPs who had already gathered at the venue before being transported in a convoy to the new location.

According to reports, the sudden change in venue came after all participating legislators had assembled at Gupkar. The decision to relocate the meeting to an off-site location surprised several attendees and prompted questions within political circles. NC MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri even remarked on social media that the group had “crossed Shalimar for unknown destination,” reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the move. The development is believed to be one of the rare instances in the region where elected representatives were collectively transported to an alternative venue for a ruling party meeting.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, however, clarified that the shift was not an abrupt decision. Posting on social media platform X, he stated that the meeting had always been planned as an off-site gathering and that arrangements had been made in advance. He emphasized that the relocation was not due to any last-minute developments, but rather part of a pre-decided plan to hold discussions in a different setting away from the usual official residence environment.

The meeting is being chaired by Omar Abdullah and includes National Conference legislators along with four independent MLAs who support the government. The agenda is focused on issues of “collective importance” and “public welfare,” with discussions expected to cover governance priorities, administrative performance, and political coordination within the ruling alliance. The gathering is seen as significant given the current political atmosphere and emerging internal differences within the coalition.

Sources within the National Conference indicate that the meeting comes at a time when signs of dissatisfaction have begun to surface among several legislators. Some MLAs, including Basheer Ahmad Veeri and Shabir Ahmad Kullay, along with independent MLA Muzaffar Iqbal Khan, have reportedly expressed concerns over governance issues, delayed policy decisions, and limited involvement of elected representatives in administrative processes. Veeri has also raised concerns regarding unfulfilled commitments on reservation policy reforms.

The internal tensions are also believed to have contributed to delays in cabinet expansion, with three ministerial positions still vacant. Party insiders suggest that the chief minister has been cautious in making new appointments to avoid deepening internal divisions. Wednesday’s meeting is therefore being viewed as an effort by Omar Abdullah to address grievances within the ruling camp, rebuild consensus, and prevent further escalation of dissent among alliance partners and party legislators.
