Omar Abdullah Defends Telecom Authority Structure In Jammu And Kashmir
Omar Abdullah supports telecom powers for LG, citing security and governance requirements in Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday defended the decision to reserve key telecom-related powers for the Lieutenant Governor, stating that the arrangement aligns with the administrative and security structure in the Union Territory. His remarks come amid ongoing political debate over the distribution of powers between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said that the decision to keep telecom-related authority with the Lieutenant Governor is appropriate, as the LG is responsible for security and law-and-order matters in the region. He clarified that the move does not violate existing administrative frameworks, including the Business Rules or the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act.
He further explained that regulations related to internet and telecommunication services fall under the Home Department, which operates under the jurisdiction of the Lieutenant Governor. According to him, this makes the allocation of such powers a continuation of the existing governance structure rather than a deviation from it.

Addressing criticism from some political leaders who accused the National Conference-led government of weakening the demand for restoration of statehood, Abdullah said expectations of an immediate resolution were unrealistic. He remarked that achieving statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is a complex process that cannot be resolved in a single meeting or discussion, though efforts toward that goal are ongoing.
Officials indicated that Abdullah is expected to travel to New Delhi soon for discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where issues related to governance, administrative powers, and statehood restoration are likely to be on the agenda.
On questions regarding the operation of liquor shops in the Valley, the Chief Minister said the government does not compel anyone to consume alcohol and that individuals make personal choices based on their beliefs and preferences. He added that the matter is sensitive due to religious considerations, but legal consumption by eligible adults cannot be restricted by the government.
Commenting on administrative functioning and cabinet expansion, Abdullah said governance in the region remains unaffected despite pending political decisions. He added that appointments and structural changes within the cabinet would be decided in consultation with the party leadership at the appropriate time, and assured that the government continues to function effectively.
